Franklin's Prosperity.

After a short trip to London, in 1726, Franklin returns to Philadelphia. He establishes deep roots in the community and starts the Junto discussion group in 1727. This group eventually became the American Philosophical
Society.

By 1757, Philadelphia has become a city of 14,000 and Pennsylvania, 180,000 inhabitants. However, in 1729, this future prosperity of Pennsylvania did not seem assured. The ffirst paper currency issued in 1723 was to expire in 1731.

Typically, paper currency was issued with a time limit. Before it expired, it could be used to pay taxes owed to the issuing government. The currency paid would be removed from circulation.

There was siginificant resistance from wealthy and political elites to a continuation of the paper currency experiment. This was out of fear that the paper currency might depreciate the same way it did in New England and South Carolina.

They wanted to use money. Only gold and silver coins should be used rather than paper currency in the province.

In 1729, Franklin discussed this issue, in the Junto. As a printer, he took the side favoring continuing paper currency.

The result of this discussion prompts him to write an anonymous pamphlet. It was one of the first to be published by his press. It was “A Modest Enquiry into the Nature and Necessity of a Paper Currency.”

Franklin is only 23 years old at the time.

Benjamin Franklin arrived in Philadelphia in 1723. He was 17 years old. There were about 6,000 people in Philadelphia, at the time. Pennsylvania’s population was about 35,000.

The province was in the doldrums. Franklin recalled seeing many vacant houses for rent, sluggish economic activity, and a decline in permanent residents. He noted that just prior to 1723, foreign trade had stripped Pennsylvania of its gold and silver coins. The colony had exchanged much of its gold and silver coins for manufactured goods imported from Europe. Without this money, local trade within the colony was difficult to transact.

Using gold and silver as money.

In this era, money was used as a medium of exchange between colonies and countries, specifically gold and silver coins. These coins also served as a medium of exchange for internal trade within a colony or country. Pennsylvania did not produce gold or silver and only procured these coins through trade.

Typcially, Pennsylvanians would export goods to Spanish and Portuguese America. In exchange, they would receive gold and silver coins. These coins would be kept in the colony and used as a medium of exchange for internal trade. OR, they would be exported to Europe to pay for manufactured goods.

Franklin's Strange Observation.

If coins were exported, the colony might not have enough money to conduct trade in the colony. Franklin often points to this in his writings. He would say that unless some measures are taken to prevent the export of gold and silver coins, foreign trade would lead to temporary shortages of gold and silver. This would inhibit internal trade within the colony.

The Pennsylvania legislature issued its first paper currency in 1723. It was the modest amount of £15,000 (the equivalent of just over 48,000 Spanish silver dollars). Another £30,000 was issued in 1724. This paper currency was not linked to or backed by gold and silver money. It was backed by...

by the future taxes due the government that would be paid in this paper currency.

After the legislature issued this paper currency, Franklin notes internal trade, employment, new construction, and the number of inhabitants in the province all increased.

Paper Currency as a Substitute for Money

Between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, banks backed their issuances of paper currency — bank notes — with reserves of gold and silver coins. Under normal conditions, bank notes were convertible at face value on demand into money. Today, gold and silver backing and convertibility conditions have been removed. Now, paper currency only circulates based on the force of the Federal government through legal tender laws.

Benjamin Franklin’s life spans most of the first age of paper currency in the colonies and the United States of America. Arguably, he is its most interested party and ardent defender. He did not create the first paper currency in America, nor was he yet born when it was first used.

Temporary Paper Currency in the Colonies

Early experiments with paper currency began in 1690 in New England. Until the first two decades of the 18th century in the Carolinas, New York, and New Jersey, they used paper currency for limited emergency wartime exercises that were temporary in design. In the 1720s, colonial legislatures started issuing paper currency. The goal was to make it a permanent fixture within their colonies. Pennsylvania was an active leader and the most successful colony in this movement, with no small thanks to Benjamin Franklin.

Permanent Paper Currency in the Colonies

It is the birth of the permanent peacetime paper currency that Franklin was able to benefit. No other American was involved over as long a period of time with so many different facets of colonial paper currency as Benjamin Franklin — certainly no other American with such a preeminent stature in science, statesmanship, and letters.

Franklin arrived in Philadelphia the year paper currency was first issued by Pennsylvania (1723), and soon became a keen observer and commentator on colonial currency. He wrote pamphlets, treatises, and letters about paper currency. He designed and printed paper currency for various colonies. He entertained ideas about and proposed alternative monetary systems.

Lobbying Paper Currency for the United States

As an assemblyman for the colony of Pennsylvania, he was involved in the debates during the 1740s and 1750s over management of its paper currency. As a lobbyist for various colonies to the British court, he dealt with conflicts over colonial paper currency arising between Britain and her colonies in the 1760s and 1770s. Finally, at the end of his life, as one of the preeminent Founding Fathers at the 1787 Constitutional Convention, he participated in constitutionally ending the first age of paper currency (Continentals) and helped usher in the second age of paper currency in America.

Benjamin Franklin is arguably the preeminent authority on paper currency in America in this period.

Paper Currency

Often, paper currency has been controversial and misunderstood. Why it has value, why that value changes over time, how it influences economic activity, who should be allowed to make it, how it is used and created and controlled, and whether it should exist at all are questions that have perplexed the public, vexed politicians, and challenged economic experts.

Knowing how, when, and why paper money first became common in America and the nature of the institutions issuing it can help us better comprehend paper money’s role in society. Benjamin Franklin dealt often with this topic, and his writings can teach us much about it.

Paper in the Colonies

There are two distinct time periods of paper money in America. The first began in 1690 and ended with the adoption of the U.S. Constitution in 1789. During this first epoch the legislatures of the various colonies (later states) directly issued their own paper money — called bills of credit — to pay for their own governments’ expenses and as mortgage loans to their citizens, who pledged their lands as collateral. This paper money was useful as a circulating medium of exchange for facilitating private trade within the colony/state issuing it.

By legal statute and precedent, people had to use their paper money to pay the taxes. Also, mortgage payments were owed to the issuing government and had to be paid using that specific paper currency, which, in turn, gave that paper a local “currency.” There could be as many different paper monies as there were separate colonies and states.

The United States and Paper Currency

At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, the Founding Fathers took the power to directly issue paper money away from both state and national legislatures. This set the stage for the second time period of paper money in America. It was the ascendance of a government-chartered and -regulated, but privately run, bank-based system of issuing paper money. It is during this time period that we are today.

An SEO Expert is going to understand what is in a page. Not just what is seen visibly, but what is also under the hood. That's like having a race car driver who doesn't know jack about what is happening under his/her hood.

I think all SEO's need to have a basic understanding of what is happening under the hood. They should have knowledge of HTML elements and attributes. They should also have a basic knowledge of CSS. Without that, they are just Content SEOs which is just one part of the equation.

Its like using a WYSIWYG editor. If you don't understand what is happening when you push a button, how are you to know that what you just did was wrong? The same concept applies to SEO. Do you know what a title element is? How about a title attribute? Not you Marcia, but in general.

Do you know which elements you should be using for which content? Should that go into a list element or a paragraph element. Should that be an h2 or an h3.

I've found that writing valid code has forced me to fully understand what each and every element/attribute I am working with is doing.

I think you miss an important part by just learning certain "layers" of SEO. If you can learn a little bit about each layer and combine that knowledge and expand from there, you have a more solid foundation for learning.

You can take comfort in knowing when you view the source code of a page you can figure out what is going on from top to bottom at quick glance. You can decipher the pages you may be looking at that are ranking highly and really refine your understanding of why.

LA-area man first in nation convicted under anti-spam law

LOS ANGELES - A man faces a sentence of up to 101 years in federal prison after being the first person in the U.S. convicted under a federal anti-spam law, authorities said.

Jeffrey Brett Goodin, 45, of Azusa, was found guilty Friday of running a "phishing" scheme that tricked people into believing they were giving personal information to a legitimate business. Prosecutors said Goodin then used the information to go on a spending spree.

Goodin is the first person in the nation convicted under the 2003 CAN-SPAM Act, the U.S. attorney's office said. The law forbids e-mail marketers from sending false or misleading messages and requires them to provide recipients with a way to opt out of receiving future mailings.

During trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Goodin used several compromised Internet accounts to send e-mails to America Online users. The e-mails appeared to be from the company's billing department and told customers to update their billing information or lose service.

The e-mails referred people to one of several Web pages controlled by Goodin where they could enter their personal information, prosecutors said.

In addition to the anti-spam conviction, Goodin was convicted of 10 other counts, including wire fraud, misuse of the AOL trademark and attempted witness harassment.

Goodin is scheduled to be sentenced June 11.

If you have a good, solid, large collection of authoritative, trust-ranked links, nothing else on your website really matters. The Matt Cutts website shows that. However, for normal websites (i.e. non-news), if you get these links too quickly, you trip another filter. Webmasters have termed this phenomena in Google the "sandbox" since it seemed to fit.

For the past few years, it appears there is always someone who wants to say it doesn't exist. Or, they say the term shouldn't be used. For those who don't remember, Google engineers have claimed they didn't intend for it but became aware of the term from webmaster forums. Google approved. Yet, they had no official status for it. They wouldn't confirm it. This always reminds me of the old cold war philosophy.

Call it whatever you like, it does exist. Links need to be collected slowly for new websites. Trust must be built. The term "sandbox" fits. For established websites with flaws in their websites which get knocked down in updates or "refreshes", they probably tripped a filter.

Replacing batteries in electric and hybrid electric vehicles is not a new idea. At one point, BMW was determined to use ultra-capacitors in its hybrids, rather than batteries. In the absence of chemical reactions, the electricity storage is much more efficient than batteries. Apparently, BMW abandoned that in their alliance with GM and DCX on their hybrid system. However, since BMW hasn't announced their own hybrids, we don't exactly know yet. Also, I believe it allows greater maximum output from a car, if one is so inclined to let a few/couple hundred kilowatts go to the electric motors.

The problem is the ultra capacitors weren't quite ultra enough yet. I'm no capacities of capacitors expert, but you are limited by size/surface area in the capacitor and 'they' appeared 500 miles is a substantial claim. This needs to be for a specific car, otherwise it's not a very specific claim. And, if such a vehicle exists, it's best to be sure it's not a lightweight go-kart like the Elise (or the new Tesla which is an Elise). Both cars tend to not fit typical automotive tastes.

There is still potential to make more effective capacitors. I believe MIT professors, students, etc. of some sort create a carbon, nano-fiber, fuzzy capacitor. It multiplies many times the surface area inside a capacitor. Specifically, it is where the charge is built. The charge-holding surface has gajillions of those little fibers. It sounded like a hilariously, expensive proposition. However, perhaps it's not as expensive as it seems to be. Possibly, it inspires others to find less expensive and similar ways to make significant advances in the field of ultra-capacitors.

We can have the wireless revolution without getting rid of all the wires. My printer can keep its wires. It doesn't move very often. My iSight camera wire doesn't bother me. My USB hub would probably be far less useful without all the wires, so let's not worry about that. It's hard to remember the last time my keyboard's cable was a problem. My keyboard simply sits there, on the keyboard drawer.

Instead of making parts of a non-mobile computer mobile, it's more interesting making already mobile computers better. We need better PDA's, or a tablet computer which is usable and affordable. The cord on my mouse is not too big a problem.

I held my positions since they were so resilient the last week. However, there was serious deterioration across the market today. So many stocks broke down.

The small hope, and it is increasingly looking unlikely, is the CPI number is less than or equal to what analysts are expecting in the pre-market tomorrow. I believe it's .04%. This results in a relief rally.

The market seems to be saying there is a strong likelihood it is a bad number. Consider energy costs rippling through the economy. If so, there will be new lows across the board. Much of the selling today was to be on the sidelines. Now the market has been wrong before. However, if it is too high, today is going to look like a good day by comparison.

At 14 (a long time ago), I answered the phone. It was just after getting home from school. The man asked for my father, and he used his first name. I said he wasn't home and asked if he wanted to leave a message. He then asked, is your mom home? I told him no, she was out.

He asked if I could help him? Then, he told me he was from the alarm company and my father asked him for a quote to have an alarm installed in the house. He was in the neighborhood and wanted to stop by the house? He wanted to see how many windows and doors were in the house which needed to be wired. I wasn't aware my Dad was installing an alarm. However, I didn't want to tell him he had to wait another three weeks to get the quote. You guessed it. I let him in the house! I watched while he measured the windows and doors. He made note of the measurements on his pad. Then, he left.

As an air-headed teen-ager, who forgot information quickly, I completely forgot to tell my dad until almost a week later. His jaw about hit the floor! I don't ever remember seeing him so angry or upset. My parents searched the house with a fine-toothed comb, yet nothing was missing. My parents called the police. However, since nothing was missing, and I hadn't been hurt, they said there wasn't nothing to be done. They did suggest my parents have an alarm installed.

A week passed and nothing happened. My mother figured the man was probably legitimate and simply had the wrong house. But, I had to remind her he asked for my dad, by name. That was why I trusted him. As my Dad pointed noted, I hadn't considered my Dad's first name was in the phone book!

My father (an ex-Major in the army) called both my brothers (big lads). They were both married. He asked them to help him to catch the robber(s). Each night, one of my brothers, or my dad, would wait all night, armed with my dad's shotgun. This lasted a full two weeks. My mother thought my dad was crazy. She begged him to stop!

So, it's three weeks to the day after getting the call. A man, who is dressed in all-black with a ski mask over his face, snuck in through the basement door. This was in the middle of the night. He did all this only to be met by my oldest brother, who was holding a shotgun in his face. My other brother's doberman pincer was waiting to rip the guy apart.

My Dad hog-tied him, in his Lazy Boy chair. Then, he called the police while my brother (an ex-policeman) held the gun, pointed at the robber. When the police arrived, my father got me up from a sound sleep. The police asked me to identify the man. Sure as day, it was the same guy I had let into the house three weeks earlier.

He went to jail and it taught me a very valuable lesson.

Beginning with the Florida update (which had 3-4 months of behind-the-scenes preparation), Google used a very different type of ranking calculation. We no longer had the fun of monthly updates. Still, there was everflux. In addition, there were lower-level algorithm shifts. These were created by "dial turning" of the existing algorithm. Major updates began occurring only when entirely new algorithm factors were installed. Each new factor was complete with its own set of "dials".

The bottom line is Revshare programs, like PPS, exist to turn a profit. As much profit as possible. They are unhappy with a 2% return. If they are losing money, they lower the %. If they are completely losing money, they go out of business. PROFIT IS THE BOTTOM LINE.

Given the above, let me explain my logical conclusion to the statement "you make more with revshare than PPS, so promote our revshare program" below.

Either:

1) the revshare program can't pay-per-signup and they hope to spin things in their favor. There is no shame in this. For PPS, it requires a huge up-front investment. If a small revshare program can't afford PPS, kudos to them for using revshare. It's better than nothing. We started with revshare and pay-per-active. It was a good starting point SEVEN years ago.

or,

2) the revshare program can afford to pay-per-signup, but THEY make a LOT more money by convincing sheep to take all the risk.

or,

3) they actually make less money. If they are saying you make more with their revshare program (versus pps), then it means they are making less with revshare vs pps. The dollar is divided only so many ways.

1) It is respectable if they are honest.

2) You are getting schooled. Go back to McDonald's.

3) This is highly unlikely. They wouldn't make a choice to earn less. They ain't yo momma. They don't love you. They do not have high hopes for your future as a doctor. They are a business. They do this to earn a profit. Remember the universal truth we are all here to make a profit.

For webmasters, DNS knowledge (and its implementation in BIND or other software) is not something which generally comes to the forefront. There are postmasters and those responsible for internet connectivity in companies or organizations large enough to have a dedicated Internet connections. They need to know about DNS in some detail.

The diagnostics at dnsreport are great. They are a useful webmaster tool. Use it the way a company looks at an external auditor. You expect the IT staff to comply with industry best practices. The auditor simply confirms it. However, the auditor doesn't know everything about the business. Sometimes a risk is aceptable, though the auditor red flags it.

Publishers have the option to block advertisers from appearing on their websites. They use whatever reason they wish. Many have had a ball blocking ads. Reasons to block incude ads which are low-paying, slightly off-target, or competitive. The problem with being filter-happy is you may inadvertently blocking the best targeted, or best paying, ads from appearing.

Blocking ads of competitors or companies whose ethics are disagreeable, is the best reason. This is what it was intended to do.

The problem with filtering is because it's not ad-specific. Theoretically, you are blocking hundreds of other ads associated with that advertiser's URL. These ads could be completely relevant, and pay well!

I really felt it important to alert everyone to one of the shadiest scams around. Let me give you one reason to read this. With so many people asking "how do you make $100 a day", you are probably going to come across these guys, and may fall for their pitch.

My friend sends me an IM, as I'm heading to bed. As plainly as could be, it says, "Want to see the biggest scam around?" Being tired, and bored, I say "Sure, but I've seen 'em all.." Then, he says "I know this is a scam, but I don't know how to prove it to ClickBank".

Now, here I am with proof after only 5 minutes of reading their sales pitch and members area. Mind you, my not-so-alert friend became a victim, buying something which "sounded so good" at 4am. For this, he's forgiven. We have all made silly mistakes now and then.

Alright, the situation...

The scammer's website is paidrefunds.com

The gist of his pitch is:

we send you rebates to your email address
you login to our secure page
you process these rebates
we send you $15

The scam - you pay them $97 to "learn the ways of the jedi scammer". In turn, they screw you over and show you how to do it for free. This is as their affiliate. I am being serious.

Note: If you want this condensed, the shorter version is at the bottom.

Sounds simple, right? Well this is where the fun begins.

By all means, read through the site and sales pitches. Wooo, weee, look at me. I earn $15 for entering some names and email addresses into a paypal form. I know, hire some kids from the local college and pay them $8/hr to process five billion rebates for me. Really, I am such a genius. Okay, let's hit purchase.

The process begins. $97 is taken out of your bank account and goes into their clickbank account. Then, you arrive at this REALLY ugly and simple page. It looks like it was made in FrontPage98, in about 3 minutes. On this page is a link to another site labeled "secret members area". It has a "fantastic support" email address which belongs to someone using AOL. I know what you're thinking, these guys are uber PROFESSIONAL!

Now, you enter the members area. You type in the "one size fits all" password, they've assigned. Here they explain how to make $15 processing rebates. However, the kicker is first they want you to follow their 3 EASY steps...

Step 1: Create a clickbank affiliate account... wait, what!?

Yep, that's right sucker. You just paid $97 to be an affiliate. Don't worry! You won't spend anymore money with this AMAZING ONLINE SYSTEM. Why? No one ever refunds it because they always make tons and tons of money, like Scrooge McDuck! Ahh yes. I now trust this site like I trust eating a piece of ice cream that has fallen onto a walk patch in Tijuana.

Step 2: Get your rebates.

To get these rebates, you get access to what looks like a huge list of FFA's and useless bulletin board links. They are drenched in more SPAM than the actual SPAM factory.. Again, don't worry! SPAM is bad and we would never tell you to do that. Then again, charging $100 to be an affiliate is bad too. However, it's only bad if you get caught!! That's our motto!

Oh wait, you thought the program supplied you with the refunds/rebates? Oh no, silly. They just wrote that on the sales page to get you to think you wouldn't be doing any of the selling or advertising yourself. Remember, there is no such thing as "false advertising!" Haha, what a silly person you are to believe them!! Better suck it up, because the fun is just getting started!

Step 3: How to send a refund.

Open your PayPal account. Send the list of people who have ordered the outdated crummy list of surveys $5. Once again, don't worry! We credited your ClickBank account with $20. You'll get the $15 at the end of the month (this would be a good place for fine print about refunded sales costing you $5. But, they don't need to bother with that at this point. They only want you to pass the 60-day grace period for a refund).

Secret Step 4: Don't refund this.

In fact, since you're already an affiliate (you know, the free part at Step 1 for which you paid $100) pawn it off to your friends and family. This way, they hate you and avoid you like the plague! This is a great plan, guys!!

If you don't want the dripping sarcasm, here's the gist of their scam, how it works, and how you get screwed, twice.

They charge you $97 to be their affiliate, with false advertising and promises that they supply you with the "leads" and you just "process" them. No. You sell/advertise their service, and you "process" it yourself using your own PayPal account. Oh and by the way, if there's a chargeback/refund, you lose $5 automatically. That's all there is to it.

Here's how it works:

The plan is for you to spam their list of surveys, using their "free" resources, on the internet. Really, these are just message boards and bulletin boards of other useless junk items. If someone happens to join under your affiliate code, you send them $5 of the $20 they send to you.

Mind you, you have to refund them through YOUR paypal account. So, actually, you are paying them $97 to be their ClickBank affiliate (which is free). AND, of the $20 commission they give to you for someone joining, you have to give $5 back to the person for joining (because the spam message you post says they get a $5 rebate).

If the customer gets this huge BS list and decides to get a refund, guess what? Of the "$5" owed from your own PayPal account, the money you get for the sale was originally credited to your ClickBank (CB) account. It now gets deducted (the original $20 you made for the sale), because ClickBank removes the cash from that refunded sale from you and the seller.

Overall, you've just LOST $5 from the ordeal. And, there's not a damned thing for you to do about it, other than suck it up. You just hope no one else does that either, which is just plain silly. Why? Because this list of "surveys" is so old, and so whored out, chances of someone not getting a refund for it is slim to none.

Moral of the story: Welcome to the internet. It is the home of the scammers and cheaters. This is a warning.

We are currently using internal linking, which is not accessible to search engines. This was done the last couple months. It works well, and actually helped increase seo of the web pages. This came from removing non-related keyword links which previously reduced kw density. It reduced our links from around 100 a page, to under 50.

The mistake many webmasters make is using their site wide internal links for seo. If you seo the page properly, you don't need those site wide internal links on every page, indexed by the search engines. You just need to create a clear path for the bot to index every page.

I use one set of site wide links. This is one page only, and that is it. All other links are subnav. These are links within a specific category to more pages or similar. This is useful to those who want to link to all their network of websites, on every page, without appearing to spam the engines.

The downside...

The downside to my navigation is in the header section of my code. This prevents using it more than once on a page. It's better to use it 3 times on the page. You want to include links within the network. However, in testing, it took up too much space in the top of the web page html. This pushed major keywords further down in the code, which gives them less importance. So... I used it for my extensive site-wide navigational system only. That did the most amount of good, seo-wise. Plus, it gave more room to get the visitor around the site, without keyword dilution.

Should scrapers be banned for life?

Their presence makes the whole browsing experience worse, and ultimately reduces the number of clicks on ads. If you did a search on widgets, and clicked on a couple of the ads only to find that what you thought would lead to a useful sites were scrapers, you'd stop clicking the ads. I no longer click ads in search because I know most of them are useless scrapers.

The other issue as has been pointed out is that as Google's search is cluttered up with junk, people are finding it harder to find what they were looking for. If that's the case then people will switch to another search engine.

Hopefully if Google are having a mass cull of scrapers, the browsing experience will improve.
The problem of having adsense chocked full of scrapers is that it's a financial disaster waiting to happen. It's called a "Bubble".

The business model of the scrapers who use adsense is to buy traffic cheaply, and hopefully convert most of the leads they get into clicks for other advertisers that are more profitable.

They don't have to make a lot of profit on the clicks - just have lots of them. However, most ads for scrapers lead to a site that is often cluttered with adsense ads for other scrapers.

The current algorithm places scrapers highly based on CTR and will often remove ads from real advertisers that pay well to place them in the mistaken belief that they will convert better. The ONLY reason the convert is that there is no content on these pages, and people click out - often via an advert. But that madness is another thread.....

Scenario:

Visitor arrives on the site, and sees an interesting ad. Clicks on it and arrives at scraper. "This isn't what I want - this ad looks promising". Click - another scraper. All that has happened is webmasters have paid / recieved a few cents for a visitor to come and go. Nobody has purchased anything. Adsense can only work if people are flexing the plastic and buying goods and services off of genuine advertisers that have goods and services to sell.

Now if you have the situation where a lot of the advertisers are scrapers, and Google (in it's wisdom / madness) has placed ads for other scrapers on the scraper, then all that is happening is webmasters are exchanging small amounts of money in exchange for traffic. It's pure bubble mentality, and bubbles burst.

Adsense HAS to be underpinned by real advertisers selling things to customers - marginalising them in favour of scrapers is absolutely crazy. Hopefully if Google are booting out scrapers they have finally realised this. What took you so long Google? Google's financial future rests on then not messing up adsense and their search engine - they HAVE to get rid of the scrapers, and SHOULD ban them for life.

first do a Memorandum of Sale. Collect all the info any reasonable buyer is likely to need and put it all together in the MoS. Examples:

1. Domain/s and what's been sold with the domain (mailing list, Adwords lists, copyright to content and design, stock, additional domains in other TLDs, custom coding, merchant accounts, ongoing deals with advertisers, extent and length of old stats available.... )

2. How long you've had the business and what the business is about (it's important you make this clear. Very often people are so familiar with their own businesses they assume everyone else understands exactly what it's about - they don't!). 3. Where the money comes from (if it's multiple income streams also mention the percentages: 15% ads in newsletter, 25% affiliate programs, 10% ads on site, 30% Adsense, 5% fastclick, 5% Cafepress sale of T-shirts etc)

4. Where the money goes (this is important. Cover not just hosting and advertising but allow for a fair salary for the time actually spent on it even if it's your own time)

7. Technical details: Stats (be honest - quote uniques rather than "hits", exclude bot figures... that sort of thing), # of PR8/7/6/5 pages, IBLs in Yahoo and MSN and URL mentions in Google. Number of pages indexed in various SEs, Alexa rank (with standard disclaimer),

8. Any known problems - 302s, www/non-www duplicate problems, Google/Yahoo bans, being on SPAM blacklists... that sort of thing

9. How much you want for the site and what support/training you're offering. Other terms, like willingness to sign a non-competition agreement.

10. How the transfer will take place. For example, via escrow on payment of 100% of agreed price into a pre-agreed escrow service the WHOIS, passwords, and site (in zip format) will be transfered to the new owner within 72 hours

Though all that takes time it saves the buyer having to do research and asking questions to which you have to find answers. With half a dozen or so potential buyers each raising 20-30 questions it could take up a lot more of your time that you expect and can really drag the sale out.

Get a non-disclosure agreement signed before any info is passed if confidentiality is important to you. Get other stuff ready like a copy of the final Contract of Sale to save time later.

How to get more traffic

After being in this game for 3 years, it seems there is no 'magic' or silver bullets that will make your site a killer. It's about taking the fundamentals and constantly working at them. Sure some of us make a lucky guess and strike gold the first time, and these are the stories you will hear from most in the media, becuase they are a whole lot more exciting about reading about a guy who took 10 years to build his business to turning over 1 million a year, but hey, thats still a good business, and because it is not built on luck, it will probably continue to do such volume.

1. Whitelabel your sites content

Because we have a profiles website we could look at ways of white labeling our content and setting the site up in a way that the content partner has total control of what is seen in the header section.

The valuable thing for a site like ours to offer this kind of setup, is that we know the average person spends 30 minutes on our website at a time, this means members are spending a good amount of time with your brand. This of course could be used in different contexts; If you have a jokes, lyrics, ringtones, etc site you could offer to do the same thing.

2. Registration Exchange

This is a techinique I mentioned in a past post, basically what I want to do is setup a standard way for sites with large amounts of logged in members to exchange between each other leads at login or logout time. It could be a straight 1:1 ratio, if site A gives site B 1000 leads, the system automatically works to give site B 1000 leads from site A.

This helps getting a small amount of constant traffic, but based on my calculations, even if from each directory you only get 1 click a week from each directory and you can spend a couple of days just filling them out in your spare time you could get on to 250 directories quite easily, this is 250 people a week or an extra 10,000+ uniques a year. Depending on what kind of business you are in of course but this could be a nice bit of traffic for you. Of course it helps PR too.

4. Networking

Just getting out there and on to forums like this, and adding people to your MSN/AIM/Yahoo list means you can exchange ideas from people and find out the best way to implement ideas. I try also to get to a few conferences every year to.

I would extend this to even maybe just lurking around Adult boards, yes I know most people in this are not in that business (first and foremost at least), but you have to admit a lot of these guys make money, so you can apply some of these concepts in your business to (just without topless girls haha).

5. Web Awards

Get on as many web awards sites as possible, this is good for PR (as in Public Relations AND Page Rank), gives you something to talk about in newsletters and to put on the site to. Also remember the guys who know these sites probably also know a lot of other webmasters that you could work on deals with.

6. Banner Exchange

Because our Australian website has 100,000+ members we get considerable page views in Australia and therefore have something to exchange. I have seen many banner ad exchanges online before but to be honest haven't spent a whole lot of time on them, this is something I have yet to fully explore.

This is the challenge with a site like ours and I would imagine many others. The problem with a lot of these programs is they seem to accept any website and a lot of the standards are very low, and well I don't think they have the same kind of effort that we put into ours. But at the end of the day, this is a numbers game, so I'm going to give this more of a go.

7. Link Exchange

Of course this is very similar to banner exchanges, except plain text links only.

We have a large number of opt-in emails, and while spamming them isn't our policy we do some promotional send outs that can include a partners message. We have a total of 50,000+ opt-in emails we can do work with. I don't know of any good exchange programs at the moment.

9. SEO

I don't think needs an explanation, while this hasn't been an area we have been anywhere near as strong as we should be, it's something we are committed to working on daily.

10. Pop Under Exchange

Once again, an example of something that can be done when you have a good amount of traffic to get some real good traction. This is something we really haven't done. Anybody know any good companies that do stuff like this?

11. Upsell on E-Commerce Sites

Now this is a one of those 'experimental' concepts I have come up with, I don't know if this would fly at all. But basically the side I'm taking this from is that sites like mine become like the chocolate bars, candy (lollies where I am from) and trashy magazines found at supermarkets. After you have spent your $100 on shopping for the week, we decide we want to spend $1.00 on the National Enquirier while waiting in the queue at the check out.

How would this work on the web? Well say if somebody goes to xyzmusic.com and buys 5 cds, there would be a little tick box saying 'add on an account for FunkySexyCool.com for $5.00', my theory is because the guy has just spent $50 on CDs and another $10 on postage and handling, $5 isn't a big hit at all. Like I said it's an idea, and from personal experience often ideas have to be changed, and then changed some more before becoming a commercial reality. What do you guys think of this way. The best thing of course, from an affiliate stand point, is that the margins could be quite high for the website that sells it, so they are making an additional $2.50 on every so many orders just for putting a tick box of a complimentry offer there.

12. Free Co-Reg Exchange

Co-Reg networks have been around for quite some time, if you are not sure what a Co-Reg network is, check out the likes of coregio.com and coregmedia.com. Basically you add a bunch of tick boxes at signup time for people to register for other offers. But how about doing this for free, on sites that accept newletter registrations/member registrations and we have a system setup that controls it so everybody gets an even amount of signups. I do not know any websites that have such a program at the moment, anybody know of any?

13. Find a chatroom to align your website with

We did this in Australia and have an unofficial chatroom that gets 300+ people in it at once in the evenings on IRC's Austnet network. This has no doubt kept our traffic strong for quite sometime. I think the conditions had to be right for this, there are lots of teenagers in Australia hanging around chatrooms and FunkySexyCool was a solution to what everybody was lacking, an easy way to look at the pictures of people they were chatting to. It is pretty much a guarantee that everybody in the chatroom has a profile so with this very 'visual' demograph it works well. Would it work in different contexts? I don't know, I would be interested to hear on different perspectives on this.

14. Start a Yahoo Group for particular niches

Having researched Yahoo Groups quite throughly, I can't see how this would really be worth the effort. But who knows? Some people might have found a way to make it work, and I would be very interested to hear their stories. When I went there, most of the links were off to adult sites, or fronts for adult sites

15. Send out Press Releases

Quite frankly, this is one area I have no idea about. Who do we send press releases to? What should we write about? Do we need a PR agency? I have always been a very direct results kinda guy, just like Adwords you spend X, you will get Y clicks and Z signups. PR seems a bit flakey. But with the resources we have now we want to give everything a go without going crazy on the budget, anybody know of any good websites for this?

16. Publich articles for ezines

Sites like to keep their content fresh, we have the luxury of a site that generates it's own content however I know all sites don't have that luxury. We could pass content on to a plethora of ezines or smaller news websites. Once again, this is an area we haven't had a great deal of experience in and would be intersted to hear how other websites have done it.

Just coming to mind I guess the notable exceptions from this list are the 'internal' promotions of tell a friend, inviting users to bookmark your site on each page, etc. I'm sure there is a tonne I missed, so if any of you guys have any additional ideas on this I would love to hear about it!

I think relevance doesn't really rank very high with Google today. And, they certainly go further then most other SEs trying to fight cheating. So I see them continuinng down the same path of doom.

If I may be so bold as to give an opinion, in their paranoia to combat cheaters, that will be the reason of their fall. Instead of building true relevance, all they succeed in doing is damaging thier serps even more.

As of today, I never use G for my personal searches. Why? I know I will only see sites with lots of BL on the first 100 results. I am not alone. More and more people are already going back to Yahoo! or MSN to find more relevant results.

I do not want to be harsh against G. But, it would be a great lesson for other SE. You see, if G successfully tried to implement something to stop cheating. the only difference would be that now only the bigger companies cheat. Believe me, they would.

This does not make them unmanipulateable. It only makes them manipulatable by larger companies. Soon, people would tire of seeing the same results on G.

I am of the opinion SEs should provide IR based on relevance by the keyword entered for the search. Not second guess, judge, filter, rate, or penalize THEN provide results. It should be left up to the web surfer what to accept or not accept.

If I am selling blenders I can't think how a mail order bride site fits. Of course, I can get real creative and create content around new brides. Draw it into how the right blender will be the defining issue on whether the marriage will work. Tie this back to immigrants and how they might not have understood that when they married.

Seems like a lot of work. It is too much stress to figure out and I'm not so sure about the return. With blenders it is easier if I started with the other kitchen products, kitchen designers, and contractors. I can get creative and think about new brides (not mail order), first-time homebuyers, or recipe clubs.

These dos and donts are for webmasters with "public" websites. This contrasts those with purely "personal" websites. Public websites are for any website visitor. Typically, these websites have a particular goal. Goals of a public website include selling a product, providing a community, advertising an organization, or offering information to a large group of people.

Public websites are not focused around the person runnig it (i.e. the webmaster). Personal websites do not need to follow these dos and donts. Os commerce: tough to optimize, customize, manage.

Miva: Easier to customize but you need modules for just about any thing you want to do. They use a proprietary script which is not widely used, the learning curve is just not worth it. You can customize the look/feel but only to a point. Its also very bad for SEO.

After some testing, it appears the current GRML browsers do not support large file sizes well. The primary problem is their inability to effeciently process the data without bloating the requirements of RAM.

A good example of RAM bloat is opening a file, with a size of 1 MB. (Any file size demonstrates this, but 1 MB is a nice measure to use for comparison.) Typically, if a file has 1 MB of data, the browser RAM requirements increase 1 MB. At least, this is the ideal.

Suppose you are using Pioneer Report MDI. You open a 1MB file. The RAM requirements jump 16 times more than the size of the file. This means a 16 MB increase in the RAM needed to display the file. In my opinion, this is not very efficient.

Subsequent versions of GRML browsers will substantially limit the RAM requirements of all files. However, for the next version of Pioneer Report MDI, this limitation is not improved. Why? It provides an incentive for users to purchase the product, rather than use it for free.

multi-document interface (MDI).

Both support files and web pages using GRML, CSV, and delimited formats.

The browser interface has three parts. The navigation area contains the navigation buttons and the address bar. The dockable area contains the toolbars and windows to support file and web browsing.

Pioneer Report MDI is in need of either filtering or find options. When working with results, it is useful to have a way to find a specific item, by value. Currently, to find a specific item value, all the results are scanned. This requires either using the arrows keys and PgUP and PgDN, or scrolling with the mouse.

To implement filtering and finds, the question becomes, "Is it necessary to create another tag or add it as a software feature?" Ideally, the Notepad find feature is the goal. It has search and replace. It highlights the found item and scrolls to exactly where it is found. It has a Find Next capability. This allows a search to find all items matching the target value.

This much is clear, saving with filtering is not going to be straightforward. How do you save a filtering or find function started by the user, in a file format? What if the user does multiple find or filter operations? Do you save the last or the first?

It is not entirely impractical to use Pioneer Report MDI to find specific items. Its sort feature allows data to be organized in predictable ways. The problem with finds becomes acute when doing data-entry, and you do not wish to lose your place by performing a sort function on all the data.

Sorting seems to work, without problems. There are no issues switching between dimensions, once a column of data has been sorted.

Sorting more than one column is called multi-column sorting. To do this, click a column to sort. Now, press the Ctrl key while clicking on the next column. The results are now sorted by the first column. The results of the first column are sorted by the second column.

Inserting now works fine. This is not a complicated feature.

Deleting works fine. The problems with it concerned deleting non-contiguous rows. This required special attention to enforce consistency.

Editing is now fixed. This was very challenging to resolve, because the list control does not have good support for this.

When first launching a browser, a dialog appears. It is used to open a history file.

History.

History files contain requests for files and web pages. If a history file is opened, these requests appear in the History window. History files are in character-delimited format. To open a history file, select it and press OK. Otherwise, press 'Cancel'.

Display.

After history, the browser opens a display window. This is a browser window. MDI browsers support many browser windows, simultaenously, for viewing files and web pages. A browser window displays content from file and web page requests. A file request opens a file (e.g. C:\somefile.txt). A web page request opens a URL (e.g. http://127.0.0.1/somefile.asp).

To support browsing, there is a Navigation Bar, Address Bar, support toolbars, workspace, and support windows.

Understanding GRML MDI browsers

GRML browsers share many common features, such as the support windows, the support toolbars, Navigation Bar, and Address Bar. However, the difference between browsers is determined by the display of file and web page content. There are two parts to a browser window. It has a form and a view.

Form.

The form displays input controls. These include edit boxes, selection boxes, and buttons. The form is displayed the same in all GRML MDI browsers.

View.

The view displays content. Content is created from column and result items.

These items are identified in GRML using tags. In CSV, or character-delimited formats, the first row usually contains the column items. All subsequent rows contain the result items.

Column items describe the items in a result. For each item in a result, there is a corresponding column item. These, column and result, items create the view of a browser window.
Form vs. view.

While the form displays the same, each browser uses a different view.

Pioneer Report MDI.

Pioneer Report MDI reads a file or web page and displays content using a list control. List controls display columns (using a header control), rows, and thumbnails (if necessary).

Tree MDI.

Tree MDI uses a tree control. Tree controls display content using a hierarchy. Columns are NOT displayed. Rows ARE NOT displayed. Thumbnails are NOT displayed.

Content displays using a parent-child relationship. The parent item, of a result, shows the value of the first result item. The child items show the value of each result item (including the first).

Pioneer Report MDI is to be released within the week. The next version is 3.71. With this release, all problems with dimensions are to be resolved. At least, this is the plan for data entry.

Previous releases had trouble with refreshing files or web pages. When lower- or upper-case are used in a tag, sometimes the parser gets confused. Editing, sorting, inserting, and deleting were not consistent, when the dimension was changed. These issues are no longer problems for the next release.

With an upcoming release, it is time to update the documentation. It is focusing away from web browsing capabilities, and more toward data handling.

A bar graph is a graph using rectangular bars to represent data points on a plane. Bar graphs are used for comparing amounts, or frequency of occurrence, of items in a set of data. Bar graphs allow comparison of groups of data, and enable generalizations of data quickly.

Attributes.

Bar graphs have a title, axes, scale, label, and bars.

Details.

The title of a bar graph is optional, but provides a description of what the bar graph is measuring.

There are two axes in a bar graph. They are horizontal and vertical. The axis, representing each item of data, is the base. The other axis represents the amount, or frequency, of each item of data.

The labels of the bar graph describe what is being measured. For example, number of cars, production hours, or time in days are possible labels. Each axis uses a label.

The scale represents the quantity of measurement. Scale could be 1..2..3, or 10..20..30, etc. Each axis has a scale.

The bars, in the bar graph, represent data plotted using the horizontal and vertical axes. The bar height is the absolute value of the data from the base. The bar width is arbitrary.

A list box is used to display file and web page content. There are multiple ways to use a list box to display content. Here, it is used with an image and a header. The image is displayed if an image attribute (column) is present for a result in a GRML file or web page. The header displays the text from the first result item of a result.

As things stand, there will be two product paths for subsequent releases with GRML support. The first path has GRML support for input controls, columns, results, and dimensions. They read files and web pages using CSV and delimited formats. They are converters, readers, writers, viewers, and editors. There are file and web browsers.

The second path will have support for all of the features in the first path. It will also support grouping, sorting, joining, filtering, and unions. Any subsequent improvements in GRML are supported in this second path. Any new features or major product improvements are available from this path.

While the first path lacks the advanced features of the second, it still has support for maintenance. This includes bug fixes, security improvements, speed enhancements, and any additional file format support. For practical purposes, GRML support in the first path ends with GRML 2.1.

Tree MDI is one of family of GRML, CSV, and text delimited file and web browsers. It reads, displays, edits, and saves files and web pages in each format. It supports multiple browser windows. Each browser window supports input controls, (hyper-)links, text, images and history. A browser window has two parts, a form and a view. The form sends web requests and the view displays results. File and web pages use GRML, CSV or character-delimited formats. Only GRML uses a form, but all formats use a view.

The form has input controls for user input. They are edit boxes, drop-down boxes, buttons, etc. The input from these controls is sent when a form is submitted. The form uses a submit control to determine the destination for a submitted request. Tree MDI is a single-form web browser. There is, at most, one form for each web page.

The view displays results. It uses columns to define how many items are in a result.These results are displayed in Tree MDI using a tree control. The tree control displays the first result item as a parent and all other result items as children of this parent. By clicking the '+' next to the parent item, the child items are displayed.

When file or web page results are first displayed in Tree MDI, only the first item of the result is visible. If a result item has a hyperlink, a double-click sends a file or web page request. Use the 'Send To' menu item to send the link to another application.

Editing is only used with child items. While the first item of a result is displayed, it is not editable. Click the '+' next to the item, and the child items appear. These are editable. Select an item and go to the Details window. Edit the item there and select another item to submit the changes.

The browser windows all reside in the workspace. The workspace supports none, one, or many browser windows. The Workspace Explorer browses the workspace. The History window displays submitted file and web page requests. Use the Details window to edit result items.

It appears specializing is a viable strategy for implementing new features of GRML. Existing web browsers are focused on different things. Data-entry, image handling, data viewing, and data manipulation are focus areas of current web browsers.

To handle data-entry, more web browsers will be developed. Trying to maintain business activity using existing web browsers is not the easiest thing to do. Much of this is due to the nature of the controls used for display. When you are doing linking, editing, sorting, deleting, and reordering in the same control, limitations will become evident.

With an understanding of the limitations of trying to do everything using one control, the advantages of specializing become apparent. This not only applies to adding features to a web browser, but also to reading GRML. A consideration is to provide a base level of support for GRML in every web browser, but other features are used in specific web browsers.

Specializing applies to features such as sorting, grouping, and joining dimensions. It is conceivable a web browser not support every feature. Of course, once in development, the consequences of this approach will become clear.

The 3.70 release of Pioneer Report MDI fixes bugs when reading GRML dimensions. Dimensions allow you to create different sets of data in a GRML file or web page. The "data sets" create a combo (drop down) box in the input form of the browser window. Each item corresponds to a dimension in the GRML file or web page. Select an item in the combo box and the data set of the dimension displays in the browser window.

They have always been a pain to get working properly. Unless you are using them regularly, it is hard to find the bugs preventing them from displaying properly. However, with the latest release of Pioneer Report MDI, these bugs are gone. Now, the only dimension problems have to do with adding additional capabilities. For example, adding sorting and grouping is a challenge using dimensions. (Actually, it is a challenge without dimensions.)

As an aid in understanding dimensions, an article needs to be developed covering its features.

To keep track of product releases, promotional activity, and web partners, dimensions are used extensively to organize the different sets of data. Pioneer Report MDI is good for data-entry in this case (not perfect). If you combine this with the bulk 'Find and Replace' of Notepad, you have a very nice management tool for monitoring the activities of building a small independent software vendor (ISV).

A release of Pioneer Report MDI is expected this week. The improvements revolve around support for dimensions. While all previous releases were designed to support this feature, there have been problems with each implementation.

Having considered the different ways to develop a consistent interface and markup for dimensions, the release this week formalizes these changes. A change to the markup language and file and web browsers supporting GRML are expected to be complete within the week.

Pioneer Report MDI lets you view, edit, and save file and web page content. You have four different views from which to choose. It all depends on what you need to do.

The Report view lets you browse large amounts of content. You organize the information you want using the sort features of this view. When you need to make content changes, this view allows you to edit the text.

The Thumbnail view is ideal for browsing large amounts of images. If you are using auction, real estate, or product websites and need to quickly find the items that interest you, this is the view to use.

The List views display an abbreviated version of web page content. The Horizontal view displays the maxiumum content given the width of the browser window. The Vertical view displays the maximum content given the height of the browser window.

Use the List views when you want to browse through a lot of items by seeing only a brief description.

All views support mouse-over tooltips. Use the 'Delete' key to remove items.
All views support cut/copy/paste when editing.
